Berry A. Heatley

Berry, who is Of Counsel to the Firm, focuses his practice on the resolution of tax disputes, as well as on domestic and international taxation.  

Berry has extensive experience as a tax attorney in private practice, as a trial attorney with the federal government, and as in-house counsel. He was a tax associate at the firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy prior to working as a trial attorney in the Tax Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. While with the Department of Justice, he received the Tax Division's Outstanding Attorney Award and was co-counsel for one of the largest tax refund cases ever litigated in federal district court (approximately $450 million plus interest), involving domestic international sales corporations (DISCs) and foreign sales corporations (FSCs).  After leaving the Department of Justice, Berry worked as in-house tax counsel for a hedge fund manager located in Bermuda and later as in-house tax counsel for a hedge fund manager located outside Philadelphia. During that time he worked on a broad range of international and domestic tax matters.

Berry received a B.S degree from the University of Virginia, McIntire School of Commerce in 1980.  He received a J.D. degree from the University of Virginia in 1986 and an L.L.M. in Transnational Business Practice from the University of Pacific McGeorge School of Law in 1999.  He is licensed in Virginia.
